Kennedy to Mrs. Frances Jane Andersen, the widow of United States Air Force Major Rudolf Andersen, who died when his U-2 reconnaissance plane was shot down over Cuba during the Cuban Missile Crisis. The letter contains a handwritten note by President Kennedy.

Rudolf Anderson Jr. (September 15, 1927 – October 27, 1962) was an American and United States Air Force major and pilot, who was the first recipient of the Air Force Cross, the U.S. military's and Air Force's second-highest award and decoration for valor.
